FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you do repairs?
Yes, we repair most types of jewelry. We work in platinum, silver, palladium, and all karats of gold. We can also repair costume jewelry and string beads and pearls. No job is too big or too small.
Do you change watch batteries?
No. We do not work on watches. We recommend Date & Time in Sudbury, Sheldon's Jewelers and Stardust Jewelers in Framingham, and Watches Etc. in Wellesley.
Do you make jewelry?
Do you buy gold and diamonds?
We buy gold and platinum for scrap, which means it all gets melted and recycled. Designer pieces of jewelry that have more value for their design should be sold elsewhere. We do not buy stones and will remove them from any pieces we purchase. Stones will be returned to the seller.
What do you pay for gold?
We pay between 62% and 63% for the pure gold content of any piece. We will go through your items, determine the karat/gold content, and weigh your piece. All prices are based strictly on weight and the current market price. The market price updates every 5 minutes while the market is open. We do not hold estimates for gold purchases. We pay by check only and reserve the right to decline to purchase at any time.
Can I just come to visit your dog?
Yes. He loves visitors....and cookies.
I found a ring on another website. Can you make it for me?
If you've found something you like elsewhere, buy it from them. We do not copy designs. We can use the design you like as inspiration, but elements will have to change.
What is a jewelry studio? Is that like a store?
We work with customers to design pieces of jewelry and do repairs. Unlike a traditional jewelry store, everything in our cases is either made by us or is a model of type of piece you could have custom made. We have a retail space open to the public with lots of displays and models for customers to try on, but in essence we are a working artist's studio. We make and repair pieces on site.
Are you open?
Yes! We are fully open our normal hours, Tuesday-Saturday 10-6. However, we see customers by appointment, and cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet with you if you do not have an appointment. We will continue to take walk-ins when we can, but priority will be given to appointments. You can book through this site or email, call or text.
What happend to Precious Metals Sudbury?
Nothing. We are the same company with a new name. Ilah, the owner and designer decided after 13 years to use her own name for the business. Our services are the same.
How long does a custom design take?
6 to 12 weeks depending on how custom and how complex the piece is and how quickly design choices can be made. We can give you a better idea of how long a project will take when you let us know what you are looking to have done. The stone buying process takes on average 1 to 2 weeks because we get our stones in for each individual customer.
How long do repairs take?
6 to 8 weeks. Some will go faster, but you should be prepared for at least 6 weeks. We do ALL of the work on site. We do require you to leave your piece with us the whole time. We do not have a virtual queue. Repairs are first come first serve.
Do you clean jewelry?
Yes, we can always give your pieces a good scrub and check your stones. We recommend having your rings cleaned and checked every six months.
How much does a custom ring cost?
That is a difficult question to answer. In general, a 14K gold ring that is fully custom designed starts at around $1200 not including the cost of any stones. However, if the piece is small or we make it in silver or 10K gold the cost can be less. Larger pieces and pieces in platinum or 18K will cost more. You can always contact us with more details about what you want to make, and we can give you a rough estimate.
When you leave your diamond with us we map it. What does that mean?
Any diamond over 1/2ct that is left with us either in a repair or for a custom design will be mapped under a microscope. We note as many distinguishing features of your stone as possible so that it can be identified using its map at any time.
